WILLIAM CRAIG - JEAN ANDERSON

WILLIAM CRAIG was born in Bankend, Avondale, on the 26th of May, 1787. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 621/2, FR287)

Son of Alexander Craig and Elizabeth Craig.

JEAN ANDERSON was born in Townhead of Greenock, Muirkirk (although the 1851 census says Avondale) and baptised on the 26th of June, 1804. (OPR Ref. 607/2, FR451)

Daughter of Gilbert Anderson and Jean Blackwood.

William and Jean were married in September 1830. There are OPR references for the 11th in Avondale (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 621/4, FR647) and for the 23rd in Muirkirk (OPR Ref. 607/3, FR833).

William and Jean are at Bankend Farm, Avondale, on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census. Jean is at Kirk Street, Strathaven, on the 1881 census.

    Jean married Thomas Lindsay (b. Avondale c.1821), son of James Lindsay and Jean Allan, at Bankend on the 28th of November, 1856. On the 1881 census, Jean is at Dykehead Farm, Avondale, with seven children, and it is possible that Thomas is at Ryland Farm, Avondale, with four children. Jean died at Lochwood Farm, Johnstone, Dumfriesshire, on the 10th of February 1904. Her son Alexander was the informant.

    Elizabeth is living with her mother at Kirk Street on the 1881 census. She married widower James Sommerville (b. Wiston c.1826), Joiner, son of William Sommerville, a Master Cooper, and Margaret Waugh, at Kirk Street on the 22nd of December 1885. James was her next door neighbour. Elizabeth died at 26 Kirk Street on the 1st of October 1907.

    Married Jane Fleming, daughter of William Fleming and Isabella Morrison.

    Gilbert died on the 5th of January 1839; the entry gives his name as Gabreal. (Transcribed from OPR)

    James died in infancy, but he is on the 1841 census, which was taken in June 1841.

    The second son to be named Gilbert; died on the 21st of March 1844. As with the previous son of the same name, the entry is given as Gabreal. (Transcribed from OPR)

    Mary never married. She died at North Halls Farm, Avondale, on the 7th of July 1936. Her usual residence was 63 Kirk Street, Strathaven.

  8. Janet Craig, born at Bankend on the 16th of July 1844. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 621/4, FR601)

    Janet never married. She died at 31 Kirk Street, Strathaven, on the 1st of December 1921.

  9. Margaret Craig, born at Bankend on the 28th of July 1848. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 621/4, FR613)

    10. Margaret married her cousin John Craig (b. Avondale c.1841) of Ploughland Farm, Avondale, son of John Craig and Margaret Anderson, at Bankend on the 2nd of June 1871. They are cousins on the Craig side, and possibly on the Anderson side as well. On the 1881 census, Margaret and John are at High Ploughland Farm, Avondale, with three children. Also present are Margaret's sisters, Mary and Janet. Margaret died at High Ploughland on the 11th of August 1909; John died there on the 1st of April 1923.

William died at Bankend on the 19th of February, 1871.

Jean died at Kirk Street on the 17th of February, 1883.
