ALEXANDER CRAIG - ELIZABETH CRAIG

A gravestone in Strathaven Cemetery bears the following inscription :

1771 THIS IS THE BURIAL PLES OF ROBERT JOHN MATHOU AND JAMES CRAGS ALL BELONGING TO AVENDALE PAROCHAS ALSO WILLIAM CRAIG IN BANKEND

(The OPR records for Avondale show an entry for "Mathou son to William Craig in Bankend April 47th 1755")

This last named William Craig could possibly be Alexander's father.

Assuming the usual naming convention, Alexander's mother would be named Margaret.

Alexander and Elizabeth were married in Avondale on the 13th of December 1783. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 621/2, FR361)

Elizabeth Craig is mentioned in the OPR entry as being "in the parish of Loudoun"; that is, from Ayrshire.

Children:

  1. Mary Craig, born in Mains of Glengivel, Avondale, on the 31st of May 1785 and baptised on the 5th of June. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 621/1, FR282)

    2. Mary Craig married Hugh Fleming (b. Avondale c.1773) on the 18th of March 1809. (Transcribed from OPR 621/2 FR380).

    Mary died at Ploughland Farm, Avondale, on the 22nd of January 1856. This was probably Low Ploughland Farm (known nowadays as Laigh Plewland). Her son John was the informant.

  2. William Craig, born in Bankend, Avondale on the 26th of May 1787. (Transcribed from OPR Ref. 621/2, FR287)
    William married Jean Anderson, daughter of Gilbert Anderson and Jean Blackwood.
  3. John Craig, born in Avondale c.1789. (Ref. his death certificate)
    John married Margaret Anderson (b. Muirkirk, Ayrshire c.1804), daughter of William Anderson and Agnes Kirkland. He died at High Ploughland Farm on the 15th of April 1876.
