ALEXANDER CRAIG - JANE FLEMING

ALEXANDER CRAIG was born in Avondale on the 12th of July, 1836. (OPR Ref. 621/4, FR577)

Son of William Craig and Jean Anderson.

Alexander is at Bankend Farm, Avondale, on the 1851 and 1861 census.

JANE FLEMING was born in Avondale on the 5th of March, 1850. (OPR Ref. 621/4, FR618)

Jane is more usually known as Jean or Jeanie.

Daughter of William Fleming and Isabella Morrison.

Jane is at Templeland Farm, Avondale, on the 1851 and 1861 census.

Jane was Alexander's cousin, once removed (Alexander and William Fleming were cousins).

Alexander and Jane were married at Templeland on the 30th of June, 1875.

Witnessed by Gilbert A. Gemmell and Eliza Steel.

Officiated by Duncan Taylor, Minister of Avondale.

Alexander and Jane are at Bankend on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census.

  1. ISABELLA MORRISON CRAIG, born at Bankend on the 27th of April, 1876. (GROS Ref. 1876, 621, 61)

    Married Gavin Struthers, son of Robert Struthers and Ann Wilson.

  2. William Craig, born at Bankend on the 11th of January, 1878. (GROS Ref. 1878, 621, 15)
    William never married. He died at 59 Lethame Road, Strathaven, on the 16th of April 1966.
  3. Jane Anderson Craig, born at Bankend on the 29th of February, 1880. (GROS Ref. 1880, 621, 30)
    Jane never married. She died at 59 Lethame Road, Strathaven, on the 27th of July 1944.
  4. Elizabeth Craig, born at Bankend on the 1st of May, 1882. (GROS Ref. 1882, 621, 51)

    Elizabeth married William Craig (b. Avondale c.1875) of Fallside, Wiston, son of John Craig and Margaret Craig, at Bankend on the 6th of October 1905. Although it does not say so on the marriage certificate, it is almost certain that Elizabeth and William are cousins, Margaret Craig being Alexander's sister (and cousin in turn to her husband John - all very complicated!). Elizabeth died at 69 Stewart Street, Carluke, on the 25th of July 1952.

  5. Mary Fleming Craig, born at Bankend on the 31st of January, 1886. (GROS Ref. 1886, 621, 15)
    Mary never married. She was witness at her sister Elizabeth's wedding in 1905. She died in Collisdene Nursing Home, Strathaven, on the 5th of January 1981. Her usual place of residence was 59 Lethame Road.

Jane died at Bankend on the 30th of July, 1908.

Alexander died at Craigmains, his retirement house on Letham Road, Strathaven, on the 9th of May, 1930.
